Weary of the cut-throat Gold Route, an old Scribe withdrew to a forgotten village and the ruin of its watermill. In its vault he found the papers of an older scribe who had lived there before him — and among them, the instructions for the mill. By them he mended the wheel and let the water run; from rags and esparto the mazos beat him paper; and on that first paper he drew no tale but a plan — the plan of a loom.

With the loom he wove all the rest: the theatre, the desk, the chart, the crier. He is no longer alone — his timeless artifacts stand about him. Now, by night, the mill flows and the compound glows, and the loom weaves to the sound of the caravaners’ own stories, called for and finished before dawn.
